Habitat Works 2005 – 2007
Between 2005 and 2007 a substantial number of habit individual enhancement works were carried out in the catchment. Individual projects were focused on the Carrigower, Derreen, Derry, Douglas, and Knickeen tributaries.
The projects took place with the advice of Central Fisheries Board scientists Dr Martin O’Grady and Dr Willie Roche. Martin Kelly, Stephen Byrne and staff of the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board carried out the actual enhancement work. All of the landowners approached agreed to participate in the enhancement programme.

Carrigower
Bank restoration works

Bank revetment works using logs and treetops reinforced with steel were put in place to reduce bank erosion and the movement of silt downstream. Stone vortex weirs and willow fencing were also put in place.

Derry
Tunnelling over a stretch of the Derry River near Tinahely was targeted. Substantial stretches of the west bank were cleared and all overhanging branches were pruned.
Shelter over pools remained while riffle zones were opened.

Stone vortex weirs were created on the Douglas II River, which branches off the Derreen River. The spawning beds were also restored with added gravel and fencing with willow slips was created.

Knickeen.
The work carried out on the Knickeen River in the Glen of Imaal was supported by the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board and Defence Forces. Stone vortex weirs were created and the spawning beds were also restored with added gravel.
