The Slaney River Trust is delighted to be represented in the pilot Slaney Catchment Community Forum (SCCF) by our Board member and renowned fisheries scientist Prof Ken Whelan. The SCCF, is one of five pilot river catchment projects across Ireland, established by LAWPRO under the new River Basin Management Plan, to support public involvement and governance on issues relating to water quality and freshwater habitats.
The inaugural meeting of the SCCF, which was held in November 2025 in Enniscorthy, marks a significant milestone in facilitating community-led participation in the protection and restoration of water quality in the Slaney catchment.
The SRT hosted members of the SCCF on a visit to observe salmon spawning activity in the Glen of Imaal in December 2025 and discuss the plight of the Slaney’s iconic salmon population. Through our input, we hope to ensure that the protection and restoration of the Slaney salmon population and other native fish species becomes a priority for the SCCF.
The SCCF membership includes representatives from the Wexford Regional Game Council, Wexford IFA, Talamh Beo, Hollyfort Development Group, Ferns Community Development Association, Edermine Ferry Rowing Club, Coastwatch, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns, Myshall Nature, Slaney River Trust, Teagasc Slaney Better Farming for Water Catchment Coordinator, Rathvilly Tidy Towns, and the Boro Dairy Discussion Group.
The forum will meet quarterly throughout 2026.
