This month’s Marine Times has a 2 page spread outlining the case put to the Joint Committee of Agriculture, Marine and Natural Resources hearing on the impact of fishing restrictions on the the Islands. There is a much longer report on the Committe’s website. The fundamental argument is that “traditional” island based communities should be allowed resume drift netting for salmon on a controlled basis. Any such a move to return mixed stock commercial fishing would be disastrous for the Salmon stocks and be entirely contrary to scientific advice. Significant numbers of salmon bound for the East coast not to mention France, Spain and the UK were caught off the west and north west islands when the drift nets were in place.
